Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gave House Democrats an ultimatum on Friday. If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi doesn’t send the Articles of Impeachment, the Senate will return to normal business.
After ripping into Democrats for their conduct, McConnell said the Senate will, “continue the ordinary business of the Senate while House Democrats continue to flounder.”
McConnell’s strong message bodes ill for Democrats. Republicans are united in a strong majority and they have all the leverage.
Impeachment may very end up effectively canceled if Democrats don’t rally and send the articles to the Senate.
The events of the last month have been unprecedented. House Democrats easily approved the articles of impeachment. But their choice to withhold the articles was unexpected and unprecedented.
The next few weeks will be critical to watch. In the meantime, Republicans will go back to filling the judiciary with President Trump’s judges.
