Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) blasted President Donald Trump on Saturday for giving pardons to four Blackwater contractors who opened fire on a crowd after Iraqi insurgents ambushed them.
The men killed 14 Iraqi civilians when they returned fire, including a child. The first to fire, Nicholas Slatten, was convicted of first degree murder and the other three were convicted of manslaughter.
“This is a disgrace to our country and to the rule of law,” Omar tweeted.
Trump argued that the pardons had public support and that the men had a “long history of service to the Nation.”
The United Nations Human Rights Office also criticized the pardons and said they encouraged others to act in similar ways.
