He is officially stepping down and the White House is shocked. As the news spreads nationwide, a search has already started for his replacement — though his successor is anyone’s guess at this point. This is stunning.
“BREAKING: Senator Burr steps down as chairman of Intelligence Committee,” reported Kasie Hunt with NBC News. She also noted that the announcement came from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
In a statement, McConnell said, “Senator Burr contacted me this morning to inform me of his decision to step aside as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee during the pendency of the investigation.”
According to CNBC, activity surrounding Burr has heated up as the formal investigation into his stock sale shortly before COVID-19 became headline news. The FBI has reportedly seized Burr’s phone as part of the process.
For his part, Burr has insisted that he has cooperated “since the beginning.” So far, this appears to be the case — but he should be prepared to take it a step further if the FBI turns up evidence of insider trading.
After all, resigning a chairmanship is one thing, but resigning from the Senate is another. The people of North Carolina do not deserve to be distracted by a Senator about to be indicted. We will see how this plays out.
