“French President Emmanuel Macron ousted his interior minister as part of a government shakeup Monday after protests against police brutality,” reported The Associated Press (AP).
According to the AP story, which was republished by Breitbart News, noted that now-former Interior Minister Cristophe Castaner had originally promised to ban police chokeholds, but then reneged.
Castaner reportedly faced “counter-demonstrations and pressure by police unions,” prompting him to reverse course. This appears to have contributed to Macron’s decision to replace him.
Macron appointed Gerald Darmanin, the former budget minister, to fill the role. But this wasn’t the only shakeup in French government, which Macron said is being refashioned for “purpose and unity.”
The French president also “replaced the ecology minister, a top priority for his presidency,” but left some other positions — such as the health minister — in place for now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
