Republican Sean Parnell has pulled out of the Senate primary race in Pennsylvania, but former President Donald Trump may end up bearing the brunt of political fallout from the move after endorsing Parnell in the race.
Parnell said he needed to leave politics after a judge awarded full custody of his children to his wife, who had alleged that Parnell was abusive during their marriage.
Parnell was the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for the seat from which Sen. Pat Toomey is retiring in 2022.
Republicans need to gain, not lose seats if they are going to retake the majority in the upper chamber.
Still, Trump’s endorsement flameout caused at least one political campaign official to say,“Trump’s got no strategy. He’s got no plans. He just wants to punish his enemies and reward his most loyal sycophants.”
