“The United Kingdom is willing to walk away from post-Brexit trade talks with the European Union if the bloc does not drop its demands that Britain abides by EU regulations on state aid for companies,” reported Breitbart News this week.
Speaking on behalf of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the UK’s government, Lord David Frost, who is handling Brexit negotiations, signaled that trade talks with the EU could be ending due to the EU’s stubbornness.
“Frost has made clear to Barnier that as things stand he would have to recommend to Boris that we go for no deal,” said a senior Conservative official, speaking with knowledge of the negotiations. Michael Barnier is Frost’s counterpart in Brussels.
As previously noted, the debate is currently over the matter of state aid for companies — particularly due to the economic fallout as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson desires flexibility on the issue in order to best serve his country.
But it appears that the EU wants part of the UK’s pie, which is why the bloc continues to oppose full UK independence as part of the post-Brexit trade deals. Knowing Johnson, he won’t back down on his nation’s sovereignty.
