For thirteen years, Britney Spears hasn’t had control of her own money. Or her own life, for that matter. Fair or not, her mental health was deemed insufficient to make good enough life decisions with her own assets.
It’s been her father, James, that’s had control over almost every aspect of Britney’s life during that time. Now, James has filed a petition to terminate the conservatorship in Los Angeles Superior Court.
“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” the paper reads. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”
The case is currently being overseen by Judge Brenda Penny, who still needs to approve the filing.
The problems around Ms. Spears not controlling her own life have been getting more and more public coverage lately, with interest in the case recently piqued by a new documentary about the situation.
As a result, James Spears has been a target of much criticism lately from both his own daughter and the public.
Now, it looks like he won’t have control for much longer, no matter his daughter’s mental state.
Britney’s lawyer Matthew Rosengart said this “represents another legal victory for Britney Spears — a massive one — as well as vindication for Ms. Spears.”
