Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman, who testified at President Donald Trump’s impeachment, was sent packing from the National Security Council on Friday, along with his brother Yevgeny. Both will be reassigned to the Pentagon, so they won’t be gone from government completely.
Of course, accusations are flying that Trump canned the Vindmans in retaliation for impeachment, but sources said it was part of a broader effort to streamline the foreign policy bureaucracy and was not because of impeachment.
No one could blame him if it did have to do with impeachment, when Vindman tried mightily to make Trump look guilty of misconduct and a quid pro quo even though he had to finally admit that he didn’t really have direct evidence of anything.
Even if it isn’t just a downsizing move, Trump had ample reason to dump Vindman after fellow NSC official Tim Morrison said that other colleagues thought Vindman was leaking information, that his judgment was suspect, and that he was not keeping Morrison updated on his actions.
To top it all off, who would want someone working closely under you who so clearly demonstrated that they think you’re a criminal and want you out of office?
