Ronald Reagan ally and former Speaker of the House Bill Batchelder was laid to rest on Friday in Medina, Ohio. He was 79 years old.
He was a Vietnam veteran and devout Christian who spent 38 years in Congress, along with some years as a judge in Ohio.
Batchelder mentored some current GOP members of Congress, including Jim Jordan (OH). His wife of 55 years Alice, who survives him, has been a federal judge for 40 years after Reagan appointed her on his advice.
“As with Reagan, anyone in politics who made the tragic mistake of underestimating Bill Batchelder inevitably would regret it,” president of the Buckeye Institute Robert Alt said of him.
He was known for building consensus to get bills passed without sacrificing any conservative principles.
