Award-winning American New York Times journalist Brent Renaud has been killed in Ukraine, according to reports.
Kyiv’s police chief Andriy Nebytov confirmed that Renaud was shot and killed in Irpin, near Kyiv.
Renaud is the first foreign journalist to be killed in war-torn Ukraine. The Times said that Renaud was not on assignment for them at the time of his death.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan called Renaud’s death “shocking and horrifying” and said the U.S. would meet with Ukrainian officials about what to do next.
Renaud and fellow journalist Juan Arredondo were filming refugees when they crossed a checkpoint and Russian soldiers began shooting at them.
