A former Navy nuclear engineer and his wife have been charged with passing along design secrets to nuclear military submarines, a violation of the Atomic Energy Act.
Jonathan and Diana Toebbe are accused of “unwittingly communicated with FBI agents and passed along sensitive military secrets, in a scheme that stretched nearly a year.”
The couple allegedly sold information “concerning the design of nuclear-powered warships” to a person they believed represented a foreign government, federal law enforcement officials said.
Jonathan Toebbe had access to classified information through the Department of Defense while in the Navy.
He and his wife got arrested after the undercover FBI agents had them make several dead drops of information and paid them $70,000 in cryptocurrency.
