Several large healthcare associations have slammed President Joe Biden over his new requirements mandating nursing home workers get vaccinated against Covid-19.
The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living reacted harshly to the news of the mandates. According to them, the Biden administration is taking choice away from those who have been working hard saving lives for the past year.
President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Health Care Association Zach Shamberg issued a statement saying, “After seventeen months of providing tireless care at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, long-term care continues to face a troubling trend of federal and state governments threatening and punishing the same healthcare heroes they once supported and rallied behind.”
Healthcare associations fear that the vaccine mandates will thin out an already overstrained workforce.
A joint statement from the AHCA and the NCAL said, “Focusing only on nursing homes will cause vaccine-hesitant workers to flee to other health care providers and leave many centers without adequate staff to care for residents. It will make an already difficult workforce shortage even worse. The net effect of this action will be the opposite of its intent and will affect the ability to provide quality care to our residents.”
President Biden would be wise to proceed with caution. Exacerbating a worker shortage in nursing homes isn’t going to help Biden rehabilitate his image with the American people.
