Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulations to Joe Biden Tuesday for winning the 2020 election.
“Vladimir Putin wished the President-elect every success and expressed confidence that Russia and the United States, which bear special responsibility for global security and stability, despite their differences can truly contribute to solving many problems and challenges that the world is currently facing,” A statement from the Kremlin read.
Putin said he looked forward to “cooperation” with Biden and continuing good relations with the U.S.
He waited to formally congratulate Biden because of legal challenges by President Donald Trump, but Monday’s vote of the Electoral College triggered his statement.
Trump has still not conceded the election to Biden, but has not succeeded in his many legal challenges and is running out of options to overturn the current vote totals.
