A gunman opened fire at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Wednesday afternoon, injuring three people before shooting and killing himself. Two of the injured victims were injured critically.
At least some of the victims are civilians, according to reports. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. local time and led to the facility being put on lockdown until about 4 p.m.
The shipyard “is across the harbor from the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.” The 78th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack is scheduled to be held on Saturday, and dignitaries were scheduled to start arriving to attend within days.
The shooter was reportedly an active duty Navy soldier. No motive for the shooting has been offered.
The base’s security force and other agencies are investigating the shooting.
