Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) and her administration have now paid off at least three officials as they left, and she included confidentiality agreements with those separations.
The officials who got agreements included the State Health Department Director, another official who helped coordinate the health response, and the unemployment insurance director. Payments ranged from $12,000 to $150,000.
Now, Republicans are trying to figure out what happened and whether the separations and agreements had anything to do with the Whitmer administation’s policy of putting COVID-positive nursing home patients back into nursing homes early on in the outbreak.
Whitmer was asked whether the payments were “hush money,” and she “bristled” at the term.
She said she could not share the terms of the separations.
