Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was just shocked by a removal notice that reached his desk. A high-ranking member of the GOP has made a surprise move.
“I don’t care that this is being done by a GOP Sheriff,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). “It’s awful to harass citizens because you think they may commit crimes,” he continued, calling out a shocking program in Pasco County, Florida.
According to Gaetz, DeSantis “has the authority” to remove Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and “should consider doing so.” An influential organization that exposes public officials for violating civil liberties has also sounded the alarm.
The Institute for Justice has revealed that through a “crude computer algorithm,” potential criminals are placed on a list and, soon thereafter, deputies are “sent out to monitor, intimidate and harass people on the list.”
It is nothing less than “a dystopian nightmare,” wrote the institute. Given the constitutional nature of the allegations, an investigation must be launched immediately. DeSantis should be the one to publicly support it.
Furthermore, Pasco County citizens should file a lawsuit in order to fully litigate the controversy. A sheriff is supposed to be the citizens’ first line of defense against unconstitutional actions — not violating the constitution himself.
