Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) just issued an evacuation order and declared an emergency. The danger is imminent and it is time to act.
“Due to a possible breach of mixed saltwater from the south reservoir at the Piney Point facility, I have declared a State of Emergency for Manatee County to ensure resources are allocated for necessary response & recovery,” announced DeSantis.
He also said that state agencies are working with “Manatee County Emergency Management” and “closely coordinating response.” Simply put, what has occurred is a major disaster.
Several hundred homes are in the process of being evacuated due to a “significant leak” that reportedly involved a containment wall that “shifted laterally,” according to a county official.
Jake Saur, the director of public safety for Manatee County, said that the “structural collapse could occur at any time,” exacerbating an already dire situation. But DeSantis and other officials are acting swiftly.
Containment is half the battle. The other half is doing everything possible to repair the leak — a process that is underway now. Please pray for Floridians as they work together to resolve this crisis.
