The latest Echelon Insights survey showed that former President Donald Trump still has a double-digit lead over his closest Republican primary opponent.
A majority, 56%, said they would choose Trump over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who got 32% support. 58% said they would “probably” vote for Trump as the nominee, and 47% said they would definitely vote for him.
The poll asked specifically why voters would choose Trump over DeSantis, they gave three reasons:
- 39% said his “proven track record;”
- 21% said he would “do a better job than DeSantis;”
- and 10% said Trump did an excellent job on the economy.
Those who chose DeSantis said he “has a better personality and is more level-headed” (24%), “Trump is too hated, controversial, [and] polarizing” (22%), and pointed to DeSantis’s performance in Florida (18%).
DeSantis has not said he is running, but his name has been mentioned repeatedly as a candidate anyway. Trump has hinted repeatedly that he plans to run for a second chance at a second term in 2024.
