While rumors of a campaign by President Donald Trump to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci continue to swirl, there have been no indications among anyone in the administration or at the National Institutes of Health that he will be let go any time soon.
NIH Director Francis Collins said Sunday that it would be “unimaginable” to fire Fauci, and President Donald Trump said again in an interview with Chris Wallace that he and Fauci have a “very good” relationship.
Collins further said that no one from the administration had asked him to demote or fire Fauci, who is the foremost infectious disease expert in the U.S. right now.
Trump has been critical of Fauci at times and did say in the interview that he and Fauci sometimes disagree.
An op-ed by trade adviser Peter Navarro said that Fauci was “wrong about everything I have interacted with him on,” but that op-ed and Navarro’s opinions were later said to not have been cleared by the White House before publication.
