Actress Jane Fonda was arrested for the fifth time at a climate change rally on Capitol Hill, this time one day before her 82nd birthday.
Her fellow protesters sang “Happy Birthday” to Fonda as she was led away by officers with her hands zip-tied. Fonda has not been charged after any of her previous arrests, and spent one night in jail so far.
Feminist Gloria Steinem protested with Fonda. Last week Sally Field was arrested with Fonda at the protest, and other celebrities including Ted Danson, Diane Lane, Sam Waterston, and Patricia Arquette have been detained with Fonda previously.
Fonda tells her protesting cohorts to wear bright red with her. She calls the protests “Fire Drill Fridays” and said she was inspired to start them by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg.
She has been protesting weekly since October.
