The UK is considering legislation similar to that in Australia and Canada right now which aims to make Big Tech giants like Facebook and Google pay for news content.
“We’re obviously concerned about access to news being restricted in Australia. As we always have done, we will be robust in defending free speech and journalism,” a spokesman for Boris Johnson said.
“We’re setting up a unit to promote competition in digital markets and ensure major tech companies cannot exploit dominant market positions,” he continued.
Facebook originally censored news content from Australia on its site, but said it would be reversing that policy in the coming days after Australia didn’t back down.
Perhaps the U.S. should consider a similar arrangement.
