House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) reportedly gave family members over $200,000 in payments from election funds over several years, according to Fox News.
Federal Election Commission (FEC) records show that Clyburn paid five different relatives the money, including two daughters, their husbands, and one grandson.
Daughter Jennifer Clyburn Reed was paid $45,000 for “consulting” and “campaign management fees” between July and December 2020. A limited liability company her husband owns also received $62,500 in office rent since March 2020.
A second daughter, Angela Hannibal, got $20,000 for truck rentals, canvassing, voter outreach, and catering between April 2018 to October 2019, the records showed. Her husband was paid about $70,000 for community and district outreach and travel reimbursements, and grandson Walter A.C. Reed got $21,000 in just the first quarter of 2022 as a “campaign management fee.”
It may be impossible to tell whether the money was paid improperly, but it does seem excessive.
