A bombshell about the Electoral College just dropped. Democrats are completely stunned — they never expected this to happen at the eleventh hour.
One of President Donald Trump’s strongest supporters, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), has announced that he will support the Electoral College results. He said trying to challenge the results would “establish unwise precedents.”
In a passionate statement, Cotton said the Founders “entrusted the election of our president to the people, acting through the Electoral College — not Congress,” and the Constitution is clear on Congress’s role in the process.
“Under the Constitution and federal law, Congress’s power is limited to counting electoral votes submitted by the states,” he said. Attempting to expand this power “would take away the power to choose the president from the people.”
Cotton has taken a lot of heat from many Trump supporters for his position, but it isn’t because he has suddenly turned on Trump. He genuinely believes that overturning the Electoral College results is a perilous idea.
His reading of the Constitution has brought him to this point — just as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has come to another conclusion. Both Republicans are constitutional conservatives who simply happen to disagree.
