The GOP is expected to hold onto a slim majority in the U.S. Senate, defying steep odds that they would do so because of a number of challenging races.
Incumbents Susan Collins (ME), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Joni Ernst (IA) all won their races despite polls showing they would likely be defeated.
Thom Tillis (NC) and Steve Daines (MT) are both expected to hold their seats, although their races were not yet called.
Tommy Tuberville picked up a seat for Republicans in Alabama in a race he easily won although polls predicted a close race.
If Joe Biden wins the needed 270 electoral votes to take the White House, the Senate will be the only thing holding him or Vice President Kamala Harris in check, at least through 2022.
