As the tensions surrounding the outcomes of the 2020 elections intensifies, some are speculating about the role of military force to bring about peace and order.
However, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld are warning that military action should be avoided.
In a joint op-ed, Cheney and Rumsfeld wrote “American elections and the peaceful transfers of power that result are hallmarks of our democracy.”
They implored leaders and citizens alike to embrace a peaceful process. “With one singular and tragic exception that cost the lives of more Americans than all of our other wars combined, the United States has had an unbroken record of such transitions since 1789, including in times of partisan strife, war, epidemics and economic depression. This year should be no exception,” the op-ed said.
They the then warned that military action would “would take us into dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional territory.”
