President Donald Trump was just completely vindicated. The Republican Party has dropped a bombshell and Democrats couldn’t be more furious.
“First of all, I think the trial is stupid,” said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Fox News. “I think it’s counterproductive. We already have a flaming fire in this country. It’s like taking a bunch of gasoline and pouring it on the fire.”
Rubio joins a growing number of GOP senators who oppose a post-presidency trial and conviction of Trump. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has said that the Senate “lacks the constitutional authority” to move forward.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has called it an “unconstitutional sham of an impeachment,” whereas Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SC) believes a trial is “a moot point” since Trump is no longer in office. Trials are meant for sitting presidents.
It is absolutely stunning that Democrats would be putting their colleagues into this mess in the first place. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pushed through a “snap impeachment” and now the Senate must deal with it.
In order to protect the constitutional purpose of a Senate trial, they should not move forward with one against a former president. It would be a terrible abuse of power and set an alarming precedent.
