President Donald Trump challenged Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Monday after the senator said he would not challenge the Electoral College vote results on January 6 when they are scheduled to be certified in Congress.
“How can you certify an election when the numbers being certified are verifiably WRONG,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “You will see the real numbers tonight during my speech, but especially on JANUARY 6th.”
“[O]bjecting to certified electoral votes won’t give him a second term—it will only embolden those Democrats who want to erode further our system of constitutional government,” Cotton wrote in a statement about his decision.
Cotton is right that as things stand now, the objections will not have the votes to amount to anything, but that’s not really the point.
I think the more objections there are, the more it will become clear that something fishy happened in the election and that steps need to be taken to ensure that the same thing doesn’t happen again in the next election.
