The “Unity” Platform of Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders released policy recommendations on Wednesday that said Biden would plan to once again shut down the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil and gas exploration and drilling, reversing action by President Donald Trump to open it to exploration in 2017.
Then-President Jimmy Carter signed an order making ANWR a wildlife reserve in 1980, but it was soon discovered that ANWR had more oil than the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), and that NPR-A had more wildlife.
Environmentalists and some Native groups have opposed oil and gas exploration on the site. Some Native groups supported exploration, however, because they would benefit from it economically.
Other groups seeing economic benefits include Alaska politicians, the fossil fuel industry, and trade unions.
But none of that means anything to Democrats trying to appease environmentalists and racial minorities.
