The jobs report for the month of May was released on Friday and it featured surprisingly good numbers that beat all expectations and predictions, and Fox News reported that President Donald Trump wasted no time in heralding the good news.
Speaking to reporters in the White House Rose Garden, and in reference to prior talk about a “V”-shaped economic recovery following the coronavirus lockdowns, Trump said, “We’ve been talking about a ‘V.’ This is far better than a ‘V.’ This is a rocketship.”
It had been feared by some that the May report would feature continued job loss and an increase in the unemployment rate. Instead, roughly 2.5 million jobs were added and the unemployment rate dropped from 14.7 percent to 13.3 percent.
“We’ll go back to having the greatest economy anywhere in the world, nothing close. And I think we’re going to have a very good upcoming few months,” the president predicted. “I think you’re going to have a very good August, very good July, but a spectacular, maybe spectacular September … and next year’s going to be one of the best years we’ve ever had economically.”
Of course, Democrats — some of whom think a down economy improves their electoral chances in November — were quick to pour cold water on President Trump’s celebration of the surprisingly good economic news.
