President Trump just shocked the nation with an unprecedented move to cancel planned Treasury Department sanctions on North Korea.
Trump broke the news by tweeting that “It was announced today by the U.S. Treasury that additional large scale Sanctions would be added to those already existing Sanctions on North Korea. I have today ordered the withdrawal of those additional Sanctions!”
The latest Treasury Department proposal was intended to crack down on Chinese shipping companies that were caught helping North Korea get around sanctions.
Donald Trump announced that that rather than punishing North Korea, He wanted to continue to foster a positive relationship with Kim Jong Un.
President Trump has prioritized building a relationship with North Korea in order to strike a deal to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.
Sarah Sanders clarified President Trump’s actions, saying that “President Trump likes Chairman Kim and he doesn’t think these sanctions will be necessary.”
