President Donald Trump just received some great news. This impeachment bombshell has stunned the nation — everyone is talking about it.
“A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol,” reported Fox News.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has called the idea of a trial “stupid” and “counterproductive,” whereas Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has said that the Senate “lacks the constitutional authority” to move forward since Trump is a private citizen.
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) thinks a trial is “a moot point” since Trump “is no longer the president, he is a former president.” As more Republican senators oppose a post-presidency conviction, Democrats’ hopes are falling away.
It is absolutely stunning that Democrats would be putting their colleagues into this mess in the first place. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pushed through a “snap impeachment” and now the Senate must deal with it.
In order to protect the constitutional purpose of a Senate trial, they should not move forward with one against a former president. It would be a terrible abuse of power and set an alarming precedent.
