President Donald Trump just received some good news and the GOP is cheering. Republicans are hoping this is a sign that the drama is finally over.
“This impeachment would be unnecessary, it would be divisive, and it’s only being done because Democrats want to keep the focus on President Trump,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on Fox News.
He seems to be signaling that most Republicans will hold the line and refuse to impeach the president. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will be able to ram it through her chamber, perhaps the Senate will block it.
But impeachment reaches the Senate at all. Gaetz believes that Pelosi could “hold those articles of impeachment so that the Senate continues with their activities,” meaning they wouldn’t have to have a substantive debate.
The case for impeaching Trump is also flimsy. There isn’t an ounce of evidence to prove he incited the Capitol riot — he even made it clear that he wanted supporters to “peacefully and patriotically make your votes heard today.”
Democrats have been out to get Trump from the beginning; some have even called for him to resign. Gaetz said that Trump “is not resigning, and he is not leaving the public stage at all.”
