Former President Donald Trump just received amazing news. Democrats are absolutely furious — they never expected their plan to be ruined.
Appearing on Fox News, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) announced that the Senate trial against Trump is “dead on arrival.” The Senate voted 55-45 on a motion he put forth saying the process was unconstitutional.
While the motion itself was defeated, 45 Republicans held strong — meaning Democrats simply won’t have the two-thirds needed to convict Trump. Paul explained why this happened during an interview with Maria Bartiromo.
“We put forward a motion that said that basically, you can’t impeach a private individual,” said Paul. “You can impeach a president, but this is why the chief justice didn’t show up.”
Paul continued: “The fact that the chief justice wouldn’t come and refused to come means that this is a private citizen, but the Constitution doesn’t allow for impeachment of a private citizen.”
He said that Democrats will get to play their “partisan game,” but it will all be for show. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is undoubtedly furious — and he will just have to live with the reality that his plan is dead.
