The Trump administration is blocking $200 million in Medicaid funding to California due to its mandate that all health care plans regulated by the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) cover unrestricted abortions.
The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights also said in a press release that it would refer to the DOJ a case involving a nurse who was reportedly forced to assist with an elective abortion at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
“California and the University of Vermont Medical Center have violated federal conscience laws and refused to work with us to take corrective action, so we are now taking action to hold them to account,” HHS Secretary Alex Azar said.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) mocked the moves in a tweet on Wednesday, saying, “Nothing like the ‘pro-life’ party eliminating healthcare during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.”
No Newsom, there’s nothing like pretending to value life when you and your party stand for allowing women to take it whenever they please, for whatever reason they please.
