Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Fox News Tuesday that the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump was “dead on arrival” after 45 out of 50 Republican senators voted to dismiss the impeachment because it was unconstitutional.
“We put forward a motion that said that basically, you can’t impeach a private individual,” Paul said of the vote. “You can impeach a president, but this is why the chief justice didn’t show up.”
What this means, Paul said, is that the impeachment is “dead on arrival”–the votes to convict Trump are not there.
Paul said the Democrats are just engaging in a “partisan game” and trying to punish Republicans for supporting Trump, but that it’s not about justice and never has been.
Unless Trump can turn this around on them and prove the claims are bogus, which will show the American people that he deserves another chance to run in 2024, if he so chooses.
