Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is completely furious. The talk around Washington is ‘defeat’ and Democrats can’t believe it — they were ready to declare victory.
According to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Pelosi likely won’t have the votes to remain Speaker in January. “You have to have 218 votes on the floor,” he said. “Last Congress, 15 Democrats voted against her.”
McCarthy continued: “Ten of those Democrats are coming back to Congress. If 10 Democrats vote against her, she will not be Speaker. We will end up somewhere about 210 or further for the number of Republicans.”
Ultimately, this means that Pelosi keeping her spot as the most powerful leader in the House is in serious jeopardy. Not a single Republican will vote for her, and moderate Democrats are lining up to oust her.
Why? Because, during a year that Democrats expected to expand their House majority, Republicans flipped several seats and Pelosi’s majority will be razor-thin at best — and her left-wing extremism is being blamed.
Given the infighting within the Democratic Party, McCarthy concluded that the GOP will be in control regardless. “Republicans will run the floor because it will be our ideas that are stronger — that the American public had rejected defunding the police, dismantling America,” he said.
