In most U.S. cities, 4o gunshot victims would constitute a mass shooting, but in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago, it’s just a typical weekend.
In the weekend ending July 11, 40 people were shot and 11 died, but that’s less than half of the 100 people shot over the long July 4 weekend there.
The fatalities included a 20 year-old and a 22 year-old man, along with several others in their thirties and forties.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) is under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Chicago over the gun violence, similarly to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s in New York.
2,021 people were shot in Chicago in 2021 through July 7, and 364 were killed in that same time period.
