Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted critical race theory (CRT) during a speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Road to Majority Conference on Friday, calling the theory “a lie,” “bigoted” and saying that is was like “klansmen in white sheets.”
“Critical race theory says every white person is a racist,” Cruz said. “Critical race theory says America is fundamentally racist and irredeemably racist. Critical race theory seeks to turn us against each other and if someone has a different color skin seeks to make us hate that person.”
Business Insider senior political reporter John Haltiwanger called Cruz’s comment “absurd,” pointing out that CRT “never lynched anyone.”
“CRT is literally just an academic framework that looks at the effects of systemic racism across society. It should not be controversial. Everything Republicans are saying about it is completely baseless,” Haltiwanger tweeted at Cruz.
What Haltiwanger and others miss, though, is the destructive influence of a theory that focuses every bit as much on the color of people’s skin as racism ever did, and makes judgments about people based on skin color and nothing else. This theory is racist, just as Cruz said.
