After Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Friday that a coup would be attempted against him within a week and that Russians were behind the plot, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied any involvement by Russia in any such attempt.
Zelensky didn’t accuse the Kremlin directly of being involved in the coup plot, and Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the speculation, “Russia had no plans to get involved. Russia never does such things at all.”
That doesn’t explain why according to Zelensky, Russia has 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine.
NATO is considering options on how to respond to the troops amassed at the border, and will discuss options at meetings next week.
U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is set to attend those meetings, but we shouldn’t expect much to come of them because of his involvement, given his incompetence so far.
