The New York City Council has outlawed the use of the words “alien” or “illegal immigrant” in its official business and statements, calling the terms “dehumanizing” and “offensive.”
Instead, the council will use the term “noncitizen” to describe green card holders, refugees, temporary guest workers, tourists, and illegal immigrants.
The change will blur the lines between various kinds of noncitizens, a move that I’m sure the council hopes will normalize illegal immigrant status and make it seem more acceptable even though it is still illegal.
Violating the new law could result in up to a $250,000 fine.
Now when they recognize that it’s as bad to come into the country illegally as they think it is to call someone an illegal alien, we might be getting somewhere.
