NFL has-been Colin Kaepernick couldn’t stand being out of the spotlight, so he’s back to stir up more controversy. He just started another war against the country that made him rich.
Nike was prepared to roll out a new shoe design featuring the iconic ‘Betsy Ross’ flag as Americans prepared to celebrate Independence Day. Because of Kaepernick, however, those plans have exploded like fireworks.
According to reports, Kaepernick contacted Nike and objected to selling the sneakers because the flag was tied to “slavery.” But this is yet another example of the washed-up athlete being ignorant of history.
The flag with 13 stars — representing our nation’s 13 original colonies — showed up “as early as 1777,” and was designed in Pennsylvania. Slavery was on its way out at the time, with the legislature abolishing it in 1780.
Americans have seen the flag in popular films such as ‘The Patriot’ with Mel Gibson. It was just as much of a rallying cry for freedom during the revolutionary era as it is today.
In response to Nike capitulating to Kaepernick’s anti-American demands, boycotts are being launched against the brand. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey even pulled nearly $1 million in tax incentives for the company to locate a plant in the state.
