The state of California has now banned singing or chanting in indoor church services, even when social distancing is maintained.
Prior to the new order, churches could hold services indoors at 25% capacity or up to 100 people, whichever was less.
The new order maintains those limits but also bans “singing and chanting activities” because they “negate the risk- reduction achieved through six feet of physical distancing.”
No transmissions have been traced to religious worship since masks and social distancing were put in place, so the new rule seems disingenuous in light of ongoing protests that have not been similarly limited nor restrictions enforced.
Hopefully the next lawsuit will address this blatant discrimination and once again reassert the fundamental right to religious expression enshrined in the Constitution. Government cannot be allowed to dictate to churches how they are allowed to worship.
