After intense backlash, crowdfunding company GoFundMe has agreed to automatically refund donations for the Canadian Freedom Convoy after the site froze the campaign.
GoFundMe froze the campaign and issued a statement saying, “Given how this situation has evolved, no further funds will be directly distributed to the Freedom Convoy organizers —we will work with organizers to send all remaining funds to credible and established charities chosen by the Freedom Convoy 2022 organizers and verified by GoFundMe.”
GoFundMe’s actions enraged millions and their brazen attempt to redistribute funds intended for the freedom convoy to “credible and established” charities bordered on theft.
GoFundMe issued an updated statement saying, “The update we issued earlier enabled all donors to get a refund and outlined a plan to distribute remaining funds to verified charities selected by the Freedom Convoy organizers. However, due to donor feedback, we are simplifying the process and automatically refunding donations.”
While they may have done the right thing, it may be too late to save their reputation. The company can no longer be trusted to handle donations appropriately.
While GoFundMe may have destroyed their reputation, this situation has been a big victory for the Canadian Freedom Convoy who, have come out looking better than ever.
