California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) is in real danger of being deposed as a new CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday found that 48% of likely voters favor recalling Newsom.
Even though California is a liberal stronghold, Gavin Newsom is so unpopular that Republicans have a real shot of taking him down.
A huge factor in the recall’s success will be voter enthusiasm. Republican voters are furious and determined to recall Newsom, whereas Democrats have been apathetic about Newsom and the recall election.
CBS News reported that “Newsom’s political fate would clearly be in better shape if all registered voters turned out next month. But as of now, they don’t all plan to vote. In fact, it’s members of his own Democratic Party who are currently less motivated than Republicans to vote, setting up a high-stakes turnout and motivation contest for Newsom and the Democrats over the next month.”
Under Newsom’s leadership, the quality of life for Californians has continued to decline dramatically. That combined with Newsom’s arrogance and disregard for his constituents has created a real opportunity for Republicans.
Conventional wisdom dictates that Governor Newsom should easily defeat the recall. However, Newsom’s situation shows that even in liberal strongholds, Democrats aren’t invulnerable.
