California now has the worst coronavirus numbers in the entire U.S. even as it is under the strictest lockdown, including a statewide stay-at-home order that even the governor himself can’t follow.
Cellphone data seems to show that compliance with the restrictions is low, and that people are largely ignoring the stay-home orders and doing what they can do to live their lives.
People’s exhaustion with more than 10 months of restrictions may have made them less likely to comply than those in other states who had a few months of break from at least some of the strict rules.
Failure of state leaders to follow their own rules has also hurt compliance, according to SFGate. Governor Gavin Newsom (D) was famously caught eating inside a restaurant when he had banned indoor dining for others across the state.
The restrictions are not expected to be lifted for several more weeks until the hospital numbers decrease.
