Breitbart News just went under. One of the most popular alternative news sites has been attacked, and America is in shock. Free speech advocates are sounding the alarm.
“[Google’s] manipulation can be powerful,” said Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) on Breitbart News Tonight, a radio program on SiriusXM. Johnson said that “what they’re doing with other search results” is “why Breitbart’s results are down so low.”
He even penned an op-ed with Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) expressing concern over the alleged suppression of information via Google’s search results. The two senators specifically pointed out the impact on conservative news sources.
“Conservative outlets have continued to face diminished search results,” they wrote, noting that “Breitbart’s visibility index is down 99.7% since 2016 and overall their Google traffic is down nearly two-thirds.”
This ultimately amounts to Google engaging in partisan electioneering and helping Democrats, at least indirectly. Search engines should present diverse information — not suppress information that doesn’t fit a particular narrative.
Johnson’s comments and his op-ed with Lee represent a continuation of talks in Congress about how to confront big tech’s attacks on free speech, from Google to social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
