Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) took the step Thursday to shut down six ports of entry into the U.S. from Mexico to limit the number of illegal immigrants who can come across the border, citing the negligence of the Biden administration in dealing with the problem.
“The sheer negligence of the Biden Administration to do their job and secure the border is appalling. I have directed the Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to surge personnel and vehicles to shut down six points of entry along the southern border to stop these caravans from overrunning our state,” Abbott said.
Abbott said that U.S. Border Patrol asked for the state’s help because it was “overwhelmed by the chaos” at the border. Drone footage appeared to show that the number of migrants who awaited processing in Del Rio doubled overnight to about 8,000.
After the initial request for help, Abbott said the Biden administration reversed itself later the same day.
“The Biden Administration is in complete disarray and is handling the border crisis as badly as the evacuation from Afghanistan,” he said. “I have directed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to maintain their presence at and around ports of entry to deter crossings.”
