The New York Times–hardly a conservative, anti-Biden newspaper–wrote this week that if the President Joe Biden administration ends Title 42, illegal border crossings are expected to jump to 18,000 a day.
The number is three times the current 6,000 crossings per day, and would amount to around 6 million illegal immigrants a year entering the country.
Title 42 is a pandemic-era restriction that keeps illegal immigrants from crossing the border for the purpose of slowing the spread of COVID-19. Biden is set to end it on May 23.
President of the Border Patrol union Brandon Judd said that a month and a half is not long enough to prepare for the rapid influx of new migrants.
Title 42 allows migrants to be expelled in about 15 minutes, while processing a non-Title 42 border crosser can take up to four hours.
