Former national security advisor John Bolton is playing a high stakes game by pushing out his book before the Trump administration checked for classified information. Now with his book in circulation, he will face criminal liability for any classified information that is discovered in his book.
U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth denied the Trump administration’s request to block publication of Bolton’s book, warning that it was simply too late to stop distribution.
However, Judge Lamberth made it clear that if Bolton’s book contains classified information as the Trump administration alleges, Bolton will be open to criminal liability.
President Trump said on Twitter that, “BIG COURT WIN against Bolton. Obviously, with the book already given out and leaked to many people and the media, nothing the highly respected Judge could have done about stopping it…BUT, strong & powerful statements & rulings on MONEY & on BREAKING CLASSIFICATION were made! Bolton broke the law and has been called out and rebuked for so doing, with a really big price to pay. He likes dropping bombs on people, and killing them. Now he will have bombs dropped on him!”
President Trump seems quite satisfied with the situation despite the loss in court.
The next step will be waiting on Trump’s lawyers to comb through Bolton’s book in a search for classified information. If they find it, Bolton is done.
