2020 Democrat presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg is facing criticism for calling fellow candidate Cory Booker “well-spoken,” a comment that some saw as similar to Joe Biden’s 2007 characterization of then-candidate Barack Obama as “clean and articulate.
The backlash against Bloomberg comes because the critics are perceiving a racial undertone to the condescending comment.
“Cory Booker endorsed me a number of times, and I endorsed Cory Booker a number of times. He’s very well spoken, he’s got some good ideas,” Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg jumped into the race last month and has joined the top tier of candidates with about six percent support in recent polls.
The billionaire businessman and former mayor of New York City was commenting on the makeup of the upcoming Democrat presidential debate, which is currently all-white.
